I am a professor of European History and specialize in comparative fascism. I completed my Ph.D. at Miami University working with Dr. Jay Baird and the Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza” working with Professor Renzo de Felice. My primary research and teaching interest has focused on Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy with a special interest in the use of propaganda as a tool of the state to control the masses. My first book The Illusion of Victory focused on Italian Fascist Propaganda during World War II while my current manuscript focuses on the Fascist control of sports and athletics and is tentatively titled, Sport, Spectacle, and Power: Mussolini and the Organization of Sport in Fascist Italy.
I have been a professor at Concordia College since 1991 and can think of no place that I would rather be. I teach courses ranging from 100-level European survey courses, to upper division courses on Nazi Germany, Imperial and Soviet Russia, and Ancient Rome. I absolutely love teaching undergraduate students, especially the students at Concordia College. It is one of my favorite things to do as a collegiate professor. In addition to my passion for teaching in the classroom, I also love traveling and teaching students on travel trips to Europe. I regularly offer a May Seminar entitled “The Twin Faces of Fascism” which is a comparative study of Nazi German and Fascist Italy. Students and I travel throughout Italy, Austria, and Germany during the month of May.
In addition to my role as a teaching professor, I also serve the college as the Faculty Athletic Representative to the NCAA as well as Chair of the Division of Humanities. As much as I enjoy serving in these roles, my greatest passion has always been in the classroom, interacting with my students, working with and learning from my colleagues in the Department of History.
In addition to my academic endeavors, I love spending time with my family and my dogs. During the academic year, when I do have free time, you can you usually find me, reading, running, swimming, hiking, mowing the grass or shoveling snow. During the summer I love to travel, research and write, and woodwork.
