I am concluding my 30th year at Concordia and currently serve as chair of the department. My specialties are U.S. social history, history of American religion, and philanthropy broadly defined. I teach survey courses in US history; upper-division courses on religion and philanthropy, African American history, and Latin American history; and a global course in human geography. Over time I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to teach in the Freshman Studies program including a seminar on Baseball and American society. The theme of diversity and inclusion has become increasingly important to my teaching and research and I am currently chair of the college Diversity Council. Several academic projects currently keep my attention. The first is a book project focused on the growth of Protestantism, Lutheran missionaries, and liberation theology in Central America, entitled, "The Best Kind of Solidarity”: Lutheran Accompaniment in Central America’s Struggle for Liberation. Another project involves the interplay between Lutherans and slavery, focusing on two key antebellum Lutherans: John Bachmann and Samuel Simon Schmucker. Finally, I’ve recently undertaken with students an oral history project of African American students at Concordia during the pivotal period 1965-1980.
My pastimes include sports, outdoor recreation, running and hiking, attending films, choir, travel, gardening, playing with our canines, and spending time with family.
